Dual portal endoscopic spine surgery offers faster, less painful recovery
Flagstaff, AZ, (Feb. 27, 2025) – A spine surgeon at Northern Arizona Orthopaedics (NAO) is now offering a groundbreaking procedure that could revolutionize the way spinal stenosis surgeries are performed.
Orthopedic Spine Surgeon Dr. Fady Hijji recently completed his third dual portal endoscopic spine surgery, a revolutionary procedure that targets and decompresses the nerves in the spinal canal through two small, microscopic incisions. This new and innovative surgery is only offered by a handful of specialized medical centers across the country including Northern Arizona Orthopaedics.
“I’m excited to bring this technology to the people of northern Arizona and it is my hope that more patients will explore this option as a path to better spine health,” said Dr. Hijji.
With this type of procedure, Dr. Hijji uses an endoscopic camera, a thin and flexible medical device with a camera and light, which navigates into the spinal cavity. This provides enhanced visualization, allowing for the effective decompression of the spinal nerves and/or spinal cord.
A traditional surgery for compressed spines typically requires making larger incisions which can lead to muscle trauma and prolonged recovery times in patients. The dual-portal endoscopic approach significantly reduces post-operative pain, helping to speed up recovery, allowing patients to return to their daily lives at a quicker rate. Additionally, by using a low-impact approach, patients can achieve nerve decompression without the discomfort associated with conventional spine surgeries.
Dr. Hijji is enthusiastic about the benefits this procedure can bring to enhance the overall patient experience.
“Endoscopic spine surgery has the possibility to change the game for patients. The potential benefits are less pain, a faster recovery time, and fewer complications.”
